In my previous posts, I discussed the songs from The Greatest Showman and how each song portrays a part of our relationship with the Lord. I’ve reordered the songs to tell a story about a man named James growing an intimate relationship with the Lord. Click the links below to read the previous posts:
A Million Dreams; Come Alive; The Other Side; Never Enough , Rewrite the Stars , This Is Me , Tightrope.
In my last post, Tightrope, I described how our faith in God is like walking on a tightrope.
In this post, I will discuss how James realizes that although the journey has been tough and full of highs and lows, trusting God has been worth it. He declares to God that from now on, he will follow God no matter where He takes him.
Here are the lyrics:
I saw the sun begin to dim / And felt that winter wind / Blow cold / A man learns who is there for him / When the glitter fades and the walls won’t hold / ‘Cause from then, rubble / One remains / Can only be what’s true / If all was lost / Is more I gain / ‘Cause it led me back / To you
Explanation: In these verses, James has lost everything. Everything he worked hard for has been lost: his possessions, his status, his friends. James has hit rock bottom. No one was left by his side except for one person: God. But James realized that hitting rock bottom has led him back to Jesus, the only person who has stood by his side through thick and thin. The only person that truly matters. The person who gave him all his possessions in the first place.
In our lowest points in life, that’s when we tend to see God’s handiwork and love in our lives the strongest. It reminds of the book of Haggai.
“Why are you living in luxurious houses while my house lies in ruins? This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Look at what’s happening to you! You have planted much but harvest little. You eat but are not satisfied. You drink but are still thirsty. You put on clothes but cannot keep warm. Your wages disappear as though you were putting them in pockets filled with holes!” —Haggai 1:4-6 NLT
“You hoped for rich harvests, but they were poor. And when you brought your harvest home, I blew it away. Why? Because my house lies in ruins, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, while all of you are busy building your own fine houses.” —Haggai 1:9 NLT
From now on / These eyes will not be blinded by the lights / From now on / What’s waited till tomorrow starts tonight / Tonight / Let this promise in me start / Like an anthem in my heart / From now on / From now on
Explanation: James realizes no matter how hard he works, if he continues to work in order to have materialistic things and show off to others, and not doing it for the Lord, he could lose his possessions and miss out on blessings. His focus needs to be on thanking the Lord for all that he has, not boasting about what he has.
James decides that he will start obeying God right now. Not tomorrow. Not in an hour. But right now. He is ready to live out his purpose the way God has called him too. He’s ready to follow God’s agenda and not his own. This time, he will shift his focus on the Lord instead of the “fame” that has caused him to be distracted and not focused on God.
I drank champagne with kings and queens / The politicians praised my name / But those are someone else’s dreams / The pitfalls of the man I became / For years and years / I chased their cheers / The crazy speed of always needing more / But when I stop / And see you here / I remember who all this was for
Explanation: We may not be called to be famous or be as big as some celebrities, but realize the things God has called you to do and do it for Him. Don’t do it for the likes, the followers, or the comments. Do it for Him. The One who is most important. The One who cares about you the most. The One who gave you your gifts and skills in the first place.
And at the end of the song, the background singers start singing, “And we will come back home / And we will come back home / Home, again!” Remember that this world is not our home. We are only living here temporarily. Wherever God is, that is your home. Declare to God that you will come back home. You will come back to Him. All He wants is you. You’re His top priority. Always and forever.
