What Does “Be Yourself” Truly Mean?

It’s difficult to uncover what you see someone portraying on social media is real or not.

The majority of us want to be authentic on social media.

We also want to be true to ourselves and express ourselves freely.

But do you truly know who you are?

Are you truly being yourself on social media or in public in general?

I don’t mean just personality wise.

I’m an introvert. I’m silly and talkative with the ones I love, but I’m quiet and reserved around others I don’t know. I use to beat myself up mentally because I wasn’t being my “authentic” self in public. I didn’t want to sit around being quiet as a mouse while others socialized around me. I wanted to engage and initiate in conversations, but my anxiety always got the best of me.

I was talking to God about this for the millionth time when eventually He told me, “Alexis, you are being your authentic self in public. It’s okay to be quiet sometimes. It’s okay that you’re more outgoing with your loved ones and reserved with people you don’t know. You are still being your authentic self. How? By displaying the spiritual fruits. You’re kind to others, gentle with others, attentive, loving, and bring peace to your environments. You show others the love that I show them and that’s all that matters. Of course, you can continue practicing getting out of your shell more in public but that’s not what matters to me. The fact that you are presenting yourself as a child of God in public is all that matters to me. And that’s you being yourself. Being who you are meant to be.”

You were created to be a child of God (John 1:12). To be an Ambassador for God (2 Corinthians 5:20). To be a vessel for God (2 Corinthians 4:7). To exhibit the spiritual fruits of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).

Being yourself goes deeper than your personality.

Being yourself doesn’t mean you have to be the center of attention, making everyone laugh in a room.

It doesn’t mean you can’t be an introvert.

It doesn’t mean you have to be an extrovert.

Being yourself means shining your light into every place you go by displaying the fruits of the Holy Spirit and allowing God to speak to others through you when it’s the right time.

When we focus on being who we were created to be, others will get a glimpse of God through us. And when they do, they may wonder, “Why is this person always so peaceful?” Or, “Why is this person always so joyful even during difficult times?”

So, reader,

Who are you truly?
